How ChatGPT Quietly Wiped Out Kenya's Essay Writing Economy One Job At A Time

In 2022, Kenya bet a decade of national policy on turning its graduates into a global army of online freelancers. That same year, OpenAI released ChatGPT. One of those two things is still going according to plan, and it is not the one involving Kenyan graduates.

A Boom Built On Borrowed Time
Cheap high speed internet reached Kenya around 2009, and the government came to see online outsourcing, transcription, data entry, graphic design, essay writing for overseas students, as a genuine route up the economic ladder (Stan, 2026). By 2022 it had formalized that bet into a ten year National Digital Masterplan. At its peak, researchers estimate at least 40,000 people in Nairobi were paid to write other people's homework, some earning five times what a public health degree would have brought them (Stan, 2026).

The Numbers That Say This Is Not Slowing Down
The collapse has not been gradual everywhere. Transcription work began drying up as early as 2017 once software could do it cheaper (Stan, 2026). The essay industry held on longer, but an index run by Scale AI and the Center for AI Safety, which measures how much freelance work leading AI models can actually complete, jumped from managing 2.5 percent of tasks last October to 16 percent by July (Stan, 2026). Oxford researcher Mark Graham put it bluntly, noting that AI has already taken large chunks of these labor markets, and Kenya will not be the only place it happens (as cited in Stan, 2026). The same month this story broke, Amazon announced the closure of Mechanical Turk, Meta scaled back plans to replace teams with AI, and Uber cut a tenth of its workforce while exiting two African markets (Stan, 2026), suggesting this is a structural shift in how companies value human labor, not an isolated Kenyan story.

The Work That Is Left Is Called Humanizing
What remains of the essay industry is mostly editing AI written papers so they slip past university detection software, work that pays but carries its own quiet irony. The people who built careers on writing what a machine could not yet write are now employed making sure nobody notices the machine wrote it.

What This Means For You Right Now
If your organization outsources knowledge work of any kind, transcription, first draft writing, basic data analysis, treat the Scale AI capability index as a leading indicator rather than background noise. A jump from 2.5 percent to 16 percent task completion in under a year suggests the safe assumption that certain jobs are AI resistant needs revisiting on a much shorter timeline than most workforce planning currently assumes.
